한국국제교류재단(KF)은 창립 35주년 기념 특별전 <메타 플랫폼: 생성되는 관계들》을 4월 16일부터 5월 15일까지 KF 갤러리와 KF 글로벌센터 메타버스에서 동시 개최한다. 1991년 설립 이후, KF는 국가와 국가, 사람과 사람, 문화와 문화를 잇는 참여형 공공외교 플랫폼으로 기능해왔다. 이러한 과정은 단순한 연결의 확대가 아니라, 서로 다른 맥락과 가치가 만나는 자리에서 새로운 의미가 생성되는 축적의 시간이었다. 그런 의미에서 KF의 지난 35년은 곧 상호 이해와 협력이 다각도적으로 '생성되어 온 역사라고도 할 수 있다. KF는 이번 전시를 통해 지난 35년간 축적해 온 교류의 경험을 동시대적 환경 속에서 새롭게 사유하고 확장하고자 한다.

디지털 기술을 기반으로 한 오늘날의 온라인 네트워크와 가상 환경은 공공의 장을 다층적으로 확장하고 있다. 이번 전시는 KF 글로벌센터 메타버스(kf.or.kr/metaverse)에서 출발하여 오프라인 전시장인 KF 갤러리에서 동시에 개최된다. 2023년, 팬데믹 한가운데에서 물리적 장벽을 넘어서는 소통을 추구하기 위해 개관한 KF 글로벌센터 메타버스는 개관 이래 다양한 국가와의 협력을 통한 쌍방교류 강연과 가상 전시 등을 개최하며 그 접근 가능성을 넓혀 오고 있다. 별도의 앱 다운로드나 프로그램 설치가 불필요한 웹 기반의 이 플랫폼은, 장벽 없는 접속으로 세계인의 참여를 증진하며, 위기 상황의 일시적 대안을 넘어 국제적 협업을 지속적으로 실험하는 디지털 공공 플랫폼으로 역할하고 있다.

온·오프라인에서 함께 개최되는 이번 전시의 제목인 '메타 플랫폼'은 현실을 대체하는 가상 공간이 아니라, 기존의 물리적 장과 병렬적으로 작동하며 새로운 접점을 생성하는 확장된 초월의 장을 의미한다. 서로 다른 차원의 공간이 중첩될 때, 만남은 고정된 상태가 아니라 동시적이고 유동적인 가능성에 가까워진다.

이번 전시에 참여한 '미디어소녀'는 대한민국을 대표하는 미디어아티스트들로 구성된 그룹이다. 이들은 고정된 구성원을 지닌 단일 집단이 아니라, 동시대 디지털 환경 속에서 작업해 온 여성 작가들이 유연하게 연결된 네트워크형 커뮤니티이다. 이들은 특정 연령이나 형식을 공유하는 세대라기보다, 생성 기술과 알고리즘적 사고를 통해 세계를 인식하고 구성하는 감각을 공유한다는 점에서 스스로를 '생성세대'라 규정한다. 이들의 작업은 완결된 결과를 제시하기보다, 상호작용과 참여를 통해 끊임없이 변화하고 갱신되는 과정을 드러낸다. '생성'은 여기에서 단순한 기술적 기능이 아니라, 만남이 형성되는 방식 그 자체를 가리킨다.

《메타 플랫폼: 생성되는 관계들》은 이러한 생성의 방식을 공공외교의 구조와 함께 읽고자 시도한다. 공공외교 또한 일방향적 전달이나 고정된 메시지의 확산이 아니라, 만남 속에서 의미가 구성되고 재구성되는 역동적 과정이기 때문이다. 오프라인 공간과 메타버스가 병렬적으로 작동하는 이번 전시는, KF가 35년간 구축해 온 소통의 인프라가 디지털 환경 속에서 어떠한 방식으로 확장되고 재구성될 수 있는지를 탐색하는 자리이며, 나아가 공공의 장이 형성되는 조건 자체를 디지털 환경 안에서 새로이 사유하고자 하는 성찰의 계기이기도 하다. 서로 다른 세계와 감각이 교차하는 이 자리에서, 관람객 또한 새로운 관계 생성의 주역으로서 소통의 지평을 함께 열어 나가기를 희망한다.

Preface

To mark the 35th anniversary of its founding, the Korea Foundation (KF) presents the special exhibition Meta Platform: Generative Connections, on view from April 16 to May 15 at both the KF Gallery and the KF Global Center Metaverse. Since 1991, KF has served as a participatory public diplomacy platform connecting nations, peoples, and cultures. This process has not been a simple expansion of connections, but rather an accumulation in which new meanings took shape at the intersections of different contexts and values. In this sense, KF's 35 years can also be understood as a history of mutual understanding and cooperation continuously “generated” in multifaceted ways. Through this exhibition, KF seeks to rethink and extend the experience of exchange built over those years within the contemporary landscape.

Today's digital networks and virtual environments are expanding the public sphere in multiple dimensions. The exhibition originates in the KF Global Center Metaverse (kf.or.kr/metaverse) and is held concurrently at KF Gallery, its offline venue. Launched in 2023 amid the pandemic to pursue communication beyond physical barriers, the KF Global Center Metaverse has since broadened its reach via bilateral exchange lectures and virtual exhibitions organized in partnership with countries around the world. Requiring no app download or software installation, this web-based platform promotes global participation through barrier-free access and functions as a public space for sustained experimentation in international collaboration-far exceeding its initial role as a temporary response to crisis.

The title of this on and offline exhibition, "Meta Platform," refers not to a virtual world that replaces reality but to an extended, transcendent field that operates in parallel with the existing physical realm and generates new points of contact. When spaces of different dimensions overlap, encounter is no longer a fixed state but moves closer to a simultaneous and fluid possibility.

“MediaSonyo,” the participating collective, comprises leading Korean media artists. Rather than a single group with permanent membership, they form a loose network of women artists working within contemporary digital environments. They identify as a "Generative Generation"-not one defined by shared age or medium, but united by a sensibility for perceiving and constructing the world through generative technologies and algorithmic thinking. Their work, instead of presenting finished outcomes, reveals a cycle of constant change and renewal driven by interaction and participation. Here, "generation" is not merely a technical function, but names the manner itself in which encounter comes into being.

Meta Platform: Generative Connections attempts to read this mode of generation alongside the structures of public diplomacy. Public diplomacy, too, is not a one-directional transmission or the dissemination of predetermined messages, but a dynamic process where meaning is constructed and reconstructed through encounter. With its physical and metaverse spaces working in tandem, this exhibition explores how the communicative infrastructure KF has cultivated over 35 years can reach further and be reconstituted within the digital realm—and offers an occasion to reflect anew on the very conditions under which a public sphere emerges. At this crossroads of different worlds and sensibilities, we invite visitors to join as active agents in the generation of new relationships, and to open fresh horizons of communication together.
