The Story of Singapore’s World-Class Airport
Written by. Yun Ye-jin(Student Press Corps, the KF ASEAN Culture House)
Until 2020, Changi Airport had been named the world’s best airport by Skytrax for eight years in a row. It was established in the 1970s when it was decided that a new airport was needed to replace Paya Lebar Airport, which lacked sufficient space for expansion. By the time Changi officially opened in 1981, It was alreading garnering worldwide attention—not only was it completed in a record-breaking time of just six years, it matched Tokyo’s Narita Airport as the largest in Asia. Since then, it has gone on to win many more awards and accolades. Singapore Changi Airport is today perhaps best known for its miniature indoor tropical forest, complete with a 40-meter waterfall called the Rain Vortex—a feature that neatly ties in with Singpaore’s vision of creating a “garden city.”The waterfall and forest are located in Jewel Changi Airport, a comprehensive, nature-themed retail and entertainment complex linked to the main airport that also offers shopping, hotel accomodations, and leisure activities. Here, visitors can discover the grandeur and artistry of the airport’s nature-inspired architecture. It is no exaggeration to say that Changi Airport is far more than an airport. If you are planning a trip to Singapore, make sure to check out the must-see places at Changi Airport before beginning your journey.※ The content is produced by the Student Press Corps of the KF ASEAN Culture House and is not an official post or press release of the KF ASEAN Culture House.
