The ASEAN Culture House, in collaboration with the ASEAN Foundation based in Jakarta, will host the exhibition ASEAN on Paper: KONNECT ASEAN Chiang Mai Print Residency from November 21st to February 18th as part of the Korea-ASEAN artist exchange project “KONNECT ASEAN.”
The KONNECT ASEAN project, which is supported by the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Fund, has been carrying out various projects since 2019 with the aim of promoting a broader understanding of ASEAN culture within South Korea. KONNECT ASEAN initiated the KONNECT ASEAN Contemporary Print Show: ARISE in 2021, and this exhibition, as a sequel to To a Faraway Friend: Beyond Afro-Southeast Asian Affinities in 2022, marks the final collaborative project of Connect ASEAN. It showcases the artistic works of 14 Korean and ASEAN artists who have experimented with various printmaking techniques using paper as their primary medium. The one-month international residency program held in seven printmaking studios located in Chiang Mai, Thailand, provided a platform for connecting young artists from Korea and Southeast Asia, facilitating vibrant exchanges of ideas and skills.
In one section of the exhibition venue, eight short films created by ASEAN filmmakers through the support from the Busan Cinema Commission will be screened with a focus on the themes of “paper” and “printmaking.” Additionally, a documentary showcasing the process of the Chiang Mai Print Residency will also be featured. Through this exhibition, we expect visitors to experience the exchange of different traditions and cultures as they converge through the combination of “paper” as a primary medium and the technique of “printmaking,” resulting in new creative endeavors.
