Scent goes beyond fragrance; it evokes memories, enhances gastronomic experiences, and delivers a sense of the environment. Through 《Scent of ASEAN 》, the various meanings of scent will give us another opportunity to gain deeper insight into the ASEAN.
Participating artists Hyeeun KWAK, Small Studio SEMI, Jehyun SHIN, Jinkyung LEE, and Keywhowekey explore the meaning and utilization of ASEAN scents within their visual languages. Hyeeun KWAK interprets the religious and spiritual beliefs of ASEAN communities through incense. Small Studio SEMI creates fitness equipment infused with fragrances commonly used in healing and meditation practices in ASEAN, providing visitors with a space to experience mental and physical stability while engaging with these items themselves. Jehyun SHIN reflects on the historical relationship between ASEAN and the world through pivotal events such as the spice trade. Jinkyung LEE explores the appearance, efficacy, and historical context of ASEAN spices in images and texts. Keywhowekey proposes campaigns and messages for the ecological sustainability of ASEAN scent, implementing various products that enable individuals to experience the scents of ASEAN and understand the significance of eco-environment in their daily lives. In < Scent of ASEAN > , focus on your sense of smell as if you were exploring your nostrils described metaphorically as caves. The exhibition aims to serve as an opportunity to enhance understanding and consensus on ASEAN culture through an artistic exploration of ASEAN's scent, fostering sensory exchanges with the region.
In collaboration with the Busan Film Commision, the exhibition will also showcase six short films from the FLY(ASEAN-ROK Film Leaders Incubator) Program. Through six films created under the theme of 'Scent' by ASEAN's next-generation directors, the intention is to enhance the accessibility of ASEAN culture to both domestic and foreign visitors, thereby contributing to mutual understanding.
