Special Field Workshop for Teachers in the Field of ASEAN

From January 5 through 7, the ASEAN Culture House hosted “Understanding ASEAN,” a special field workshop for 19 elementary and middle school teachers in Busan. The first day of the workshop, which aimed to enhance participants’ general knowledge base on Southeast Asia, was held under the theme “Understanding the History and Culture of Southeast Asia.” Through lectures, participants learned about the status of Korea-ASEAN ODA (official development assistance) as well as the religions and movies of the different ASEAN countries. On the second day, participants moved away from the traditional lecture format to experience ASEAN’s culinary culture through a cooking class, where they tried their hand at making two Indonesian dishes: mi goreng, a stir-fry noodle dish, and the fruit beverage es teler. On the final day, participants discussed strategies on incorporating higher-level (non-beginner) content on ASEAN into their curricula.

The workshop was designed as a result of the ACH being designated by the Busan Education Training Institute (BETI) as a partner institution to assist with content that is difficult for the BETI to offer on its own. Since becoming a BETI partner in September 2021, the ACH has distributed high-quality content and information on ASEAN countries through various events.
