From April to June, the ASEAN Performance Series for Children will be held at the auditorium on the 4th floor of the ASEAN Culture House. On the last weekend of every month, ASEAN fairy tales will be performed onstage for children. Angalo the Giant will be staged at 2:00pm and 5:00pm on Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1. It is a creative musical for children that combines the Philippine folk tale “Salt in the Sea” and the Korean tale “The Millstone That Grinds Salt.” In the story, Angalo helps villagers with all his heart but is hurt and saddened by their selfishness. The musical gives the audience a chance to think about friendship, trust, and consideration for others. Viewers learn about the peaceful coexistence of nature and humans through the story of people who lose all of their salt in the sea because of their endless greed.

The narration at the beginning and end of the performance is in Tagalog, one of the main languagesspoken in the Philippines, and the theme song is an arranged form of the Philippine folk song “Orde-e.” The costumes are inspired by the barong, a traditional Philippineattire. Children and adults in the audience can participate in the show, waking up the giant by tapping their feet, clapping their hands, and making noise with shakers. They will travel to a fantastic island and explore the world where nature and humans cannot help but coexist in peace. Check out the performance for Angalo the Giant’s voice, expressed by a contrabass, and the movement of red ants, played on traditional gayageums.
