‘ASEAN Cinema Week 2019: ASEAN Cinema NOW!,’ a film festival held to supplement the 2019 ASEAN-Republic of KOREA Commemorative Summit, kicked off in Seoul with an opening ceremony and screening at CGV Seoul Myeongdong Station Cine Library.

The opening ceremony, held on November 1, was emceed by actor Oh Chang-seok, the festival’s honorary ambassador. Lee Geun, President of the Korea Foundation, delivered an opening speech that was followed by congratulatory messages from Seo Jeong-in, Head of 2019 ASEAN-Republic of KOREA Commemorative Summit Preparatory Office; and Oh Seok-geun, Chairman of the Korean Film Council.

ASEAN ambassadors to Korea, other diplomats, presidents of art and cultural institutions, and a variety of representatives were in attendance. Following a congratulatory performance by acapella group Maytree, eight directors and actors from the festival’s featured films were introduced, including representatives of the opening film Friend Zone.
Throughout the festival, these special guests participated in Guest Visit (GV) question and answer sessions with audience members to deepen viewers’ appreciation of the films on offer. A total of 10 films were shown (one from each of the ASEAN member countries) to some 1,000 audience members during the festival’s opening weekend in Seoul from November 1 – 3.
‘ASEAN Cinema Week 2019’ then traveled to the Busan Cinema Center for screenings on November 15 – 16. The festival will continue at Megabox Jeju on December 7 and at the Asia Culture Center in Gwangju on December 12 – 13.
