Tattooed Asia

 

This project was organized to shed light on a side of Asian culture often unseen by the general public the world of Asian tattoos. By tracing the historical and cultural roots of tattooing in the region, the exhibition reveals the aesthetic beauty of the tattoos themselves only scratches the surface of the incredible religious, ideological and mythological depth behind their creation. Through its data collected from field surveys in Thailand, the Philippines, Myanmar and Japan, the exhibition is sure to get under the skin of all in attendance. Items on display include the tools used by the master monk tattooist of Wat Bang Phra temple in Thailand and Whang-od Oggay, a traditional tattooist in the Philippines, as well as various photos, illustrations, and video clips examining the traditional art of tattooing.
