Easy Access Myanmar

The Easy Access Myanmar program ran from August 9 to 26 at the ASEAN Culture House. Regular lectures within the Useful and Mysterious ASEAN series, led by Dong-A University Professor In-ah Kim and Busan University of Foreign Studies Professor Jang-sik Park, gave attendees the opportunity to explore the traditional craft works and cultural heritage assets of Myanmar. A special cultural activity for kids offered children the chance to make a pathein thi, or traditional umbrella, while activities geared toward adults provided the opportunity to make traditional food and drink of the country, including kyar zan hyaw (a dish similar to Korean japchae), laphet thoke (fermented tea leaf salad) and lapheye tea. In addition, the screening of the Myanmar film The Monk provided a window into the Buddhist culture of the country and the way of life practiced among monks. It is hoped that through this program participants will have generated an active interest in the country of Myanmar.
