Nga Ba

Nga Ba (2016)

· Director: Khin Saw Myo / Myanmar

This film tells the story of the resilient spirit of impoverished and uneducated Myanmar peasants amid the horrors of the country’s colonial occupation. The back story is grounded in the 1940s during the British colonization of the country and the invasion of Japanese forces. The peasants were exploited by the Japanese military, under which they suffered indiscriminate and often deadly violence. Most notorious of all was their conion to aid in the construction of the Burma Railway, also known as the Death Railway, connecting Thailand and Myanmar. In 2017, the film was publicly released as the final film of the 2nd Independence Movement International Film Festival, presenting the opportunity for the public to understand the realities faced by those who were alive during the country’s occupation.
