Bagan, the Glorious Landscape of
Ancient Buddhism

Bagan and Yangon represent the past and the present of Myanmar, a country that is often called a “hidden gem” of Asia. While both cities are breathtaking in their own ways, Bagan, with its stunning architecture, feels like stepping back in time. The city has a movie-like quality that reminds visitors of its history as the capital of Myanmar’s first kingdom.
According to records, Bagan was once the site of more than 4 million Buddhist pagodas and stupas that housed countless sarira (Buddhist relics). Due to natural disasters including earthquakes, only about 3,000 pagodas remain today. Among these, the Shwezigon, Ananda, Bu, and Thatbyinnyu Pagodas are the most famous.
The city is divided into Old Bagan and New Bagan; Old Bagan is a hub for tourism housing more than 80% of the remaining pagodas while New Bagan was created to serve as a home to residents who were relocated in order to protect the pagodas.
With Bagan’s magnificent skyline and the incredible sunrise and sunset views offered by its pagodas, the city’s recent designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site comes as no surprise. Tourists who climb the steep stairs of a pagoda at dawn or dusk are rewarded with a mystical view, the pale sunlight reflecting its golden rays off the pagodas in the distance. Bagan always exceeds the expectations of visitors to Myanmar, offering up a calm and moving experience.
Travel Tip
Bagan offers a hot air balloon tour that operates only at sunrise and sunset. This tour is a must if you’re hoping to get a glimpse of Bagan’s famous pagodas and see the glorious scenery of ancient Buddhism from above.
