The Woman Who Left

Director: Lav Diaz / The Philippines /
Running Time: 226 min.
The Woman Who Left was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival in 2016. Famous for its running time of almost four hours and its blackㅡandㅡwhite cinematography, the film depicts the Philippines in 1997. The main character Horacia is falsely accused of a crime and imprisoned for 30 years. When she returns to her hometown after serving her sentence, she finds the citizens interacting with the utmost caution against a backdrop of rampant corruption and distrust. Horacia’s hometown represents the reality of the Philippines at the time, leading the audience to raise many questions. In Korea, The Woman Who Left was introduced at the 42nd Seoul Independent Film Festival. Director Lav Diaz is famous for keenly depicting the Philippines through a lens of truth, a theme he also explores in the 2009 film Visitors, a part of the Jeonju Digital Project.
