Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives

Director: Apichatpong Weerasethakul / Thailand, etc. /
Running time: 113 min.
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives is a film of Buddhist and Thai fairy tales. It begins when the main character Boonmee, who is suffering from a severe kidney disease, moves to a farm in the countryside. Boonmee suddenly starts to see the ghost of his late wife, and their son who went missing many years ago returns home in the form of “a monkey with red eyes.” Thinking about the cause of his disease, Boonmee embarks on a journey with his family through the jungle, headed toward the mysterious cave on top of a hill where his life first began. The movie, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010, also features the reappearance of Tong, the main character of Apichatpong’s 2004 film Tropical Malady, itself the winner of the Jury Prize at that year’s Cannes Film Festival. Tropical Malady is also recommended to viewers hoping to understand more about the director’s broad worldview.
