Wooden Handicrafts of Laos

Golden door of Luang Prabang's Wat Sensoukaram
The wood carving, which is typically engraved with various patterns, is one of Laos’ most representative traditional crafts. Wood carvings souvenirs are frequently sought out by travelers to Luang Prabang and Vientiane. There are various types of wooden crafts, ranging from Buddhism-themed traditional carvings to those that embody a more modern aesthetic. There are communities of sculptors in the vicinity of Luang Prabag that offer hands-on programs for visitors to create their very own carvings.
The wooden handicrafts of Laos originate from the ancient kingdom of Laos as well as Buddhist culture. The country’s wooden handicraft technology was driven by a very practical background — namely, the vast array of palaces and temples, all of which were built from wood. Following the last monarchy of the Laos Kingdom, which was based in Luang Prabang, there are master craftsmen who remain active in the present day.

The traditional wooden crafts of Laos are primarily made from rosewood. Even today, rosewood is widely used as a material for furniture and musical instruments, and the name for the wood is derived from the rosy scent that emanates from it while carving. The high quality and characteristic scent of rosewood makes it a popular export item, not only within the ASEAN region but also to the farthest reaches of the Arabian peninsula and East Asia. Rosewood timber and handicraft objects were also discovered in a sunken 14th century ship along the coast of Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do Province, proving that East Asia and ASEAN had an active trade relationship far before modern times.
